Tandjung Sari · Sanur, Bali, Indonesia
You come for the beach. The bungalow tells Sanur.
Tandjung Sari is a family-run boutique hotel on the beach in Sanur, Bali. This demonstration shows how we would cover its bungalows, its food and its cultural work.
In 30 seconds
Place Tandjung Sari is a family-run boutique hotel on the beach in Sanur, made up of stand-alone bungalows set in enclosed gardens.
People The Wawo-Runtu family still runs the hotel and supports a foundation dedicated to Balinese arts. This demonstration does not simulate any meeting with them.
Activity The official website highlights an Indonesian cooking class and documents the cultural program of the foundation.
- Origin
- a private address where four small bungalows welcomed family friends in 1962.
- Transmission
- a foundation created in 1987 to support Balinese arts.
- Illustrated format
- two scripted nights to show the rhythm of a complete report.
- Status
- a non-lived demonstration built only from official sources.
Why we came
Tandjung Sari began life as a private address. The official website explains that Wija Wawo-Runtu and his family stayed here during their trips to Bali, and that in 1962 four small bungalows hosted their friends. The hotel grew without leaving that domestic scale behind: autonomous cottages, enclosed gardens, materials and objects that point to Balinese craftsmanship.
What follows is not a trip report. Each scene starts from a public fact. In a real production, this scenario would be replaced by timings, photographs, the authorised words of someone we met and our independent assessment.
The stay, hour by hour
Three days, eleven moments
Day 1 · Entering through the garden
15:00
We arrive at Jalan Danau Tamblingan No. 41, Sanur. The Hideaway offer includes a round-trip airport transfer, a cold towel and a welcome drink. The beach borders the property and the bungalows are scattered through the gardens. This first passage sets the coordinates of the story: a hotel in the centre of Sanur, but an arrival that immediately turns toward the greenery and the sea.
16:10
The Village Bungalow carries part of Tandjung Sari's story. Sixteen cottages are among the first structures designed by the founder. Each group of four is arranged around a balé kulkul tower. The bedroom and living area share a single volume; the bathroom opens onto an outdoor shower and a private garden. Units can vary, so we would focus on the specific bungalow allocated rather than an abstract room type.

18:20
We follow the path from garden to beach. The restaurant occupies an open wantilan pavilion and a wooden deck under camplung trees facing Sanur Beach. The walk is short, but it changes the setting: the garden walls give way to the shoreline. One photograph is enough here if it captures that transition; another general view of the hotel would not add anything.

20:00
The first dinner sets a clear direction: understand the hotel's cuisine without projecting a menu that is not yet in front of us. The Mini Rijsttafel brings together Indonesian and Balinese dishes for two people. We would ask for every dish without chilli, then check its ingredients before recommending it. The story only names what actually arrives at the table.
Day 2 · Reading the hotel through its details
Morning on Sanur Beach: regional context, not the hotel.

06:30
The restaurant opens at 6:30 am. We join the à la carte breakfast as the day begins on Sanur Beach. The table, the daily menu and what is happening along the shore become the material for this moment. Nothing is added in advance: the dishes served, the space we actually occupy and the pace observed that morning give the scene its precision.

09:40
We return to the bungalow to look at the materials rather than the overall view. Local artisans built these cottages; old doors, terrazzo, batik tiles and enclosed gardens make up their vocabulary. The photograph moves in close on a combination of textures, a material or a trace of use. Before we attribute any gesture, we ask who maintains or restores these elements.
15:00
The cooking class links an action, a person and the table. The stated idea is simple: discover Indonesian family cooking, its ingredients and its techniques with the chef. We would follow the ingredients used, the preparation requested without chilli and the exact role of the person passing on the recipe. Their words would only enter the story with their consent and in their exact wording.
19:30
Dinner comes back with a different question: does the family cooking described by the hotel show up on the plate? Tandjung Sari connects the meal to its founding story and recalls the place of Tatie Wawo-Runtu's soto ayam in that memory. We do not assume the dish is on the menu. The link is built only from the actual menu, the conversation with the team and the preparation that is really served.
Day 3 · What the hotel passes on

09:15
The Tandjung Sari Foundation becomes the thread for the final morning. The Wawo-Runtu family created it in 1987 to support Balinese arts. It documents knowledge, supports its transmission and backs the performing arts. We would look for who is leading this work today and how it fits into the life of the hotel, without confusing the foundation's own presentation with an independent measure of its impact.
15:30
On Fridays and Sundays, classical Balinese dance classes are announced from 15:30 to 17:00. A cultural evening is also held on the first and third Saturday of the month. The calendar therefore decides what we can document. Before taking any images, we would ask permission from those in charge and from the people present, with extra care if children are taking part.

18:00
We return to the bungalow without repeating the room visit. An old door, handmade tiles or a balé in the garden can connect the stay to the history of Tandjung Sari. We keep only the detail observed on site. That is what closes the story: a specific, visible element rather than a general conclusion about Bali.
The room
Tandjung Sari lists sixteen Village Bungalows, arranged in groups of four around a balé kulkul tower. Each cottage has a main room, an outdoor shower, a private garden and a rest pavilion. Units can differ. A real report would photograph only the occupied bungalow and explain how it is used.

Things to do
- Join the cooking class after confirming the schedule and the price.
- Understand the work of the Tandjung Sari Foundation with its agreement.
- Attend a cultural activity if the calendar and permissions allow.
- Observe the differences between bungalows without entering an occupied space.
Eat
According to the official website, the restaurant is open daily from 06:30 to 23:00. It offers a wantilan pavilion, a terrace on the beach and a Mini Rijsttafel whose exact composition must be confirmed. For Tom and Julie, every order would be requested without chilli and checked before any recommendation.
The vibe
Tandjung Sari presents itself as a handmade hotel composed of cottages in gardens, with a restaurant on the beach. This demonstration does not qualify the quietness, service or nightlife atmosphere: all of that requires being on site.
That's why
The detail that would justify the trip would not be chosen before the stay. The strongest lead is the continuity between the bungalows designed by the founder, the locally made objects and the family foundation created in 1987.
You'll love it if
- You prefer a garden bungalow to a hotel tower.
- You choose a place for its story as much as for its beach.
- You want to connect architecture, food and cultural transmission in one stay.
- You accept that part of the experience depends on a cultural calendar to be confirmed.
Skip it if
- You are looking for an isolated resort: Tandjung Sari is in the centre of Sanur.
- You want every room to be strictly identical: the site specifies that bungalows within the same category can vary.
- You expect a cultural program available at any hour: classes and evenings follow specific days.
- You prefer a stay whose story rests mainly on sports activities.
Our take on Tandjung Sari
Tandjung Sari is a strong candidate for a Lived Travel feature, but this demonstration does not count as a post-stay review. The sources provide three concrete threads: a family hotel born from bungalows built for friends, craft-based architecture and a foundation active since 1987. Place, people and activity can line up without an artificial concept.
The intended traveller values the story of a place over the impact of a recent opening. They want to stay on the beach, remain in the centre of Sanur and understand the details of the bungalow. Someone seeking total seclusion or a dense sports program will find a better match elsewhere.
Still to be tested: sleep, the beach during the day, chilli-free food, the relationship with the team and the foundation's real level of activity. Without those observations, we do not give a rating or a "Worth the flight" score.
